Staff Picks: Jessie's Ten Favorite Books

Each month, we ask one employee to tell us about their ten favorite books. This list is no holds barred -- any genre, any size -- whatever they really want to talk about. The only restriction is that the books still be in print so that we can help you find them if they sound good.

This month's presenter is Jessie, the newest employee at Stacey's. Jessie came to the big city from a small town to find adventure, then got a job at a bookstore. She enjoys movies and long walks on the beach.

Harold and the Purple Crayon
by Crockett Johnson

"From this imaginative little book sprung my first imaginary friend."

A Wrinkle in Time
by Madeleine L'Engle

"Meg Murray is having problems in school, her little brother Charles Wallace is the town freak, and their father has been on a mysterious mission for years. Then one dark and stormy night a stranger busts into their lives and helps them get started on the business of setting things right...hopefully. I read this and the other books in this series over and over again. I might say Madeleine L'Engle got me through the period between Barbies and acne, a short but significant time."

Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas
by Tom Robbins

"The stocks are down, and that is very bad news for one Filipina who is going for the big bucks. Adding to her money problems is the fact that both her best friend and her boyfriend's professional thief-cum-Christian monkey are missing. Throw into this equation a repulsive stockbroker with a thing for amphiibians and the hijinks ensue. Plus, the book is written in the 2nd person, the only one I've ever read. I loved the way it made me feel like I was in the story."

Ishmael
by Daniel Quinn

"A gorilla teaches a man how to save the world. To me, this book has little entertainment value, but it brought up a number of ideas that wouldn't have otherwise ocurred to me."

Amphigorey Also
by Edward Gorey

"Freaky books with freaky little pictures. Always morbid, always funny. Amphigorey Also has samples of all things Gorey, so it's a great way to get started if you've never read him, or a great addition to your library if you have."

The Catcher in the Rye
by J.D. Salinger

"This is my favorite book of all time for reasons I cannot explain. I guess it makes me feel part of the world in a way nothing else has."

Great Expectations
by Charles Dickens

"A wonderful book brilliantly told. Dickens is one of my favorites in general, but I like this one in particular because it's sort of open-ended."

100 Selected Poems
by e.e. cummings

"Cummings does great things with words and punctuation. This book has gone everywhere with me since high school."

Emma
by Jane Austen

"When Emma's governess marries the man Emma introduced her to, Emma decides that she's the perfect matchmaker and starts setting up all of her friends--against their better judgment. The characters in this and all of Jane Austen's novels are wonderful and very human in spite of their propriety."

The Sky Book
by Richard Misrach

"All sky all the timne. These pictures are amazing in their simplicity and so different than some his other, violent images, which are incredible in their own way."
