Staff Picks: Stacy's Ten Favorite Books

Each month, we ask one employee to tell us about their ten favorite books. This list is no holds barred -- any genre, any size -- whatever they really want to talk about. The only restriction is that the books still be in print so that we can help you find them if they sound good.

This month's presenter is Stacy. Stacy is a resident of San Francisco, leaseholder of the apartment of upheaval, squalor, turmoil, and bad chi, and she does not live in L.A.

She is a sub-sub-auxiliary deity of the much maligned medical books floor and thusly spends most of her time hiding in the supply closet. When not lodged in the supply closet, Stacy prefers to spend her time in the children's section, attempting to achieve the ideal catatonic state.

Other Staff Picks:
Ed | Alison | Jed | Cinnamon | Brad | Ingrid | Erika | Doug | Kim | Jessie | Louisa | Cynthia
No Longer Human
by Osamu Dazai

"Existentialist desolation is rarely beautifully rendered, but Dazai's semi-autobiographical work is simply, for lack of better word superlatives, beautiful and life-changing. I cannot say enough about this book or about this author, but I will learn from his example and be spare--a terribly beautiful book."

The Princess Bride
by William Goldman

"This movie is one of the few that has me gibbering the lines from it, and I personally feel that a religion should be based upon it. The book? A universe should be based on it. At least one could rest easy knowing that there would be constant romper-room-meets-fairy-tale action and plenty of sly witticisms and blatant satires. Perfect for after reading No Longer Human and worrying about the fate of humanity after Andre the Giant's demise."

The Robber Bride
by Margaret Atwood

"Atwood's novel is an easy read yet one that broaches some intresting and hidden subjects. This novel skillfully debunks the myth of a female sisterhood and reveals female rivalry and the evil backstabbing cheerleader that lies in all of us with the double x chromosome."

Emma Who Saved My Life
by Wilton Barnhardt

"This is such a fun and easy read, it feels like a night out with your friends, drinking beer and swapping stories."

The Three Theban Plays
by Sophocles

"Despite the imposing nature of Greek tragedy, these plays in are as thrilling and action-packed as an episode of Jerry Springer. The Oedipus plays will always convince you that your own family is in reality quite normal."

The Brave Little Parrot
by Rafe Martin, illustrated by Susan Gaber

"Much like the gray parrot hero in this story the book does not look like much. But you must READ THIS BOOK. It has the best moral ever."

CLICK, CLACK, MOO, Cows That Type
by Doreen Cronin, illustrated by Betsy Lewin

"A kid's book that promotes union values and a workers unite moral, Click Clack Moo is a tale of barnyard protest that is quirky & charming. It is also the only book for preschoolers that features the scene of the "nuetral party" duck delivering the "ultimatum" to Farmer Brown."

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
by Judith Viorst, illustrated by Ray Cruz

"We've all had them, those days, and reading Alexander will put a bright patch in one of those days."

Little Miss Spider
by David Kirk

"A bright shiny joyfilled childrens book with bright primary color pictures that fill your soul with little miss spider happiness. The story line is also wonderful, of the everything works out snugly and cozily school of endings."

Dinosaur Roar!
by Henrietta Stickland, illustrated by Paul Stickland

"Now we have come full circle with my ten favorite books and the last one is, like the first one, a testimony to sparity. Ok, much less existential than No Longer Human and heavier on the smiling dinosaurs aspect, but the zen is still there. Paul Stickland also draws the happiest most colorful dinosaurs on the planet."
